LIMITED LEMONS

LIMITED LEMONS 10” x 10”

I have recently prepared a new workshop where I’ll be explaining how to approach a painting using a limited palette to paint a still life and why, by limiting your choice of paints to just 3 (plus white), it forces you to explore the art of colour mixing, deepening your understanding of colour interactions.

We are going to consider lots of compositional ideas and guidelines, arranging and lighting our fruit in a coloured glass bowl with different coloured backgrounds.  We will be looking to create interesting and unusual compositions, shadow shapes and colour relationships.  We will then sketch out our composition on canvas, before applying the paint in a dynamic and interesting way: focusing on colour mixing, brushwork and how to paint shadows effectively.

Check out the workshops page and have a go for yourself!

Created with a Limited Palette of just 3 colours plus White.

THE RULE OF THIRDS

I have a various still life workshops that I deliver … here is one key element that crops up every time:

Position key elements on lines and intersections to add tension, balance and interest.

My plan, when I‘m painting is to put:

…the most saturated colour in these areas and

…the points of maximum contrast in these areas (lightest light next to darkest dark)
