USING YOUR ‘ARTISTIC LICENCE
When teaching there is always a point, later in the day, where I find myself saying to students - don’t be a slave to what you see - ‘you’re the artist - you do what works for the painting from this point’…
I watched a caricaturist at work many years ago - one of the funniest things I have ever witnessed as he’d dressed himself up like ‘Les Patterson’ - teeth n’ all, and proceeded to brutally tear apart whomever was brave enough to sit themselves in his chair, both verbally and on the page. Anyway…He had hung up next to him, a frame containing his ‘artistic licence’ - genius! Giving himself permission to completely destroy you. So - remember to use your ‘artistic licence’ - it’s your painting you’re in charge!
